"Do you ever shut up?!" you asked through clenched teeth. You were beginning to regret accepting Lady Stark's mission to escort Jaime Lannister back to King's Landing. Jaime just smirked at you. You took a deep breath and reminded yourself not to let Jaime get under your skin. That was what he wanted and you weren't going to give him the satisfaction. "Actually, never mind. I've gotten used to it," you said, taking Jaime's arm and moving him toward the small boat. The river would be the fastest way.

After traveling with Jaime for weeks, you really had gotten used to him and, in truth, you started to feel for him. You discovered that, when he was away from his family, Jaime was a different person. A better person. He even told you the story of what had happened with the Mad King.

You were carefully running the blade of your knife over his cheeks when he began his story. "Hold still," you muttered. In between drags of the knife, Jaime spoke. "Burn them. Burn them all. That's all he kept saying. Over and over again." You stopped and looked at him. You could hear the pain in his voice. "That's why I did it. To protect the realm." He looked up at you with eyes that were begging you to believe him. That was the beginning.

After that day, you and Jaime opened up to each other a bit more. You grew closer and you found yourself falling for him. You knew that, even if he felt something for you on the road to King's Landing, that feeling would disappear when you made it to the city. Back in King's Landing, Jaime had his knighthood and Cersei whispering in his ear. Any feeling he may have had for you would leave as quickly as it came. The thought kept you up at night sometimes.

You were awake, staring up at the stars and sighing on occasion. "Do you want to tell me what's the matter with you?" Jaime's voice cut through the silence of the night, making you jump slightly. You thought he was sleeping. "Nothing." Jaime scoffed and sat up. "You've been sighing like that all night. It's obviously not nothing." You shook your head. "Nothing you need to concern yourself with, Ser." Even without looking at him, you knew he was frowning. You had stopped calling him "Ser" a couple weeks before.

"You're supposed to escort me safely to King's Landing. How can you do that if you're distracted?" he asked with a smirk and you glared. "I am more than capable of keeping you safe. My 'distraction' as you called it fuels me to do so." Jaime's brows came together over his green eyes. "What do you mean?"

"You want to protect people you love, Jaime," you said, avoiding his gaze. Your soft confession was met with silence that weighed heavily on your heart. "Never mind. When we reach King's Landing, you will forget me anyway. I will leave and you will never have to see me again. You can go back to your life before me." You got up and started to walk away. You needed a few minutes to be alone.

You ignored Jaime's calls of your name. You cursed yourself. You were so close to King's Landing. You had only needed to keep your feelings to yourself for a few more days and instead, you had to open your mouth and make things awkward for you both.

You had only been alone for a few minutes when you heard a ruckus back in the direction where you'd left Jaime. Unsheathing your sword, you ran back. Jaime was surrounded and, while you had given him a sword, he couldn't take on all those men by himself. Especially not with one hand. You quickly ran to help him and in no time, the two of you had dispatched the attackers.

"Are you alright?" you asked him, panting heavily. Jaime nodded. You took a step closer and wrapped your arm around his waist. You just needed to be close to him right then. Jaime stiffened first, but he soon melted into your touch. "Y/N?" You pulled away and looked at him. "I love you too." Your jaw dropped. "You do?" Jaime nodded.

"I wasn't sure at first. Love is something I've never really been afforded, but yes. I do love you." You smiled, but it quickly faded. "What?" he asked. "You say that now. But when we return to King's Landing, how long will it be before you change your mind?" You took another step away from him. Jaime said nothing. Deep down, there was part of him that knew you were right.

When the two of you reached King's Landing, Jaime would be back with Cersei. He would return to the one person who could influence him to do or not do anything. She could convince him that he felt nothing for anyone but her. However, Jaime wasn't sure that's what he wanted. He wondered if he'd robbed himself of the chance to find something better. To find something to make him happier.

"Y/N?" You looked up. "I don't want to return to King's Landing." You shook your head. "We have to. I promised Lady Stark. You in return for her daughters. I will get used to feeling this heartbreak." Jaime grabbed your arm with his good hand. "I won't. I cannot return to life without you." You leaned forward and kissed his cheek. "Please, Y/N. Let's try to make it work." You nodded and Jaime felt a strange sensation in his chest. Jaime realized that he had something new. He had hope. Hope for his future away from Cersei and King's Landing. Hope for his future with you.
