Lucas's POV

We could hear the ambulance pulling up a few meters away. The sounds of people rushing towards where Uncle Cole waited with Lydia as well as the number of cops who started surveying the area.

We ducked down. Trying to stay hidden behind the thick bushes and trees as the beams from their flashlights crossed us.

"I think we better get going before they see us." Xavier told me through our link as he went to crouch beside me.

"Yeah." I replied before turning back to the others. "We better get going. We'll take Kate home on our way back to the pack."

"What?? No!! I'm going back with you. I can't just leave Francis in the state that he's in right now." Kate immediately objected as she stood beside Uncle Brody who carried her brother.

"Chances are, the cops are gonna be out looking for you to ask some questions. Especially since they'll find out about..." I didn't finish what I was going to say, but by the solemn look on her face she knew that I was referring to her dead boyfriend.

"They're probably gonna look for you at your house first." I then added after a pause.

"What do I even tell them??"

"Something simple but believable." Scott voiced. "Two of you were on a date. You wanted to get away from the noise so you went here. Then something started chasing you into the forest. Robby tried to save you. Told you to run."

"What about Lydia??" Xavier asked. "She was clearly shot."

I couldn't help but notice Chase wincing at the very mention before he continued.

"How does she fit into Kate's situation??"

"She doesn't." This time, it was the older vampire who answered. "I'm sorry if I sound a bit crude with this but it's safer for us that way. Making the police think that this and with what happened to her boyfriend were completely different situations. They already know that there's something out there that's killing people. I don't think that they need to know that it's somehow connected with this shooting. They're gonna be asking questions. Wanting answers on how. It's better if we keep them from investigating further and possibly discovering something that's linked with the supernatural. And I'm sure that your Uncle Cole thinks that way too."

I listened and completely understood were Uncle Brody was coming from. We needed to keep as many humans out of our world as possible since who knows what could happen.

And though Kate who still looked to be a bit reluctant at leaving her brother behind, ultimately caved as she gave Francis a glance.

"Okay." She said. "Okay I'll do what you say and go home. But if my brother wakes up, or anything at all..."

"You'll be the first we call if that's the case." I told her in assurance and she seemed to appreciate the gesture and nodded.

"I can take her to her house first before heading back to the pack to change. Sorry guys, but I don't wanna wait any longer by looking for the bag of clothes we brought with us." Chase spoke up as he watched Lydia being carried away by the paramedics while uncle Cole spoke with the other cops.

"I think it'd be better if you just went straight back home." Kate told him and Chase couldn't help but look at her when she said this. "Lydia told you to come see her at the hospital and I know that you want to be by her side too. Don't worry. I can manage going home by myself."

"We can't be sure that it's safe for you to go on your own. It wouldn't be trouble. I can just drop you off by your house and..." He moved to take a step closer towards her but was caught off-guard when Kate took a slightly panicked step back.
