The Final Test

We were all up and getting breakfast from the food bar in the tree room. The sun was shining into the room and it just seemed so peaceful.

"The sun is shining, no dinosaurs are chasing us, and most importantly, breakfast is served." Sammy sighed in bliss.

"Feels weird to have nothing to worry about for once." Yaz said.

"Yeah, definitely. I, myself, am very relaxed." Darius agreed.

"Oh, same. I'm, like.....chill." Brooklyn said. Sammy and Yaz looked at us before walking off to eat at a table.

"You're not though, right?" Darius asked before he sighed. "I wanna trust Kenji's dad, I, I really do, but......"

"He gives off total liar vibes?" Brooklyn finished for Darius while grabbing a donut.

"I've been getting this weird feeling about him. I don't trust him." I spoke up as I grabbed a donut.

"Yeah. But we can't turn Kenji's world upside down just because of a vibe." Darius sighed.

"No, but what if it turns out we're right?" Brooklyn asked. We stared at each other in silence before jumping when a sudden voice spoke up.

"Why so doom and gloom in here, bros and girlf?" Kenji asked as he walked up and took a donut.

"Kenji!" Darius smiled.

"Morning!" Brooklyn yelled.

"That's the spirit. Man, am I pumped for today? Dad actually wants my help." Kenji grinned. He grabbed a plate of food before walking away and sitting at a table. Brooklyn, Darius, and I glanced at each other before grabbing our plates and sitting down at Kenji's table.

"I'm so happy you're happy, Kenj. So, has he mentioned anything about when we get to call home or anything like that?" Brooklyn asked.

"Well, you heard him. He just needs a few days to arrange everything safely. Plus, he's super focused on the presentation right now. You get it." Kenji shrugged before taking a sip of his drink.

"Right! So since you brought it up, now that dino fights are off the table,....."

"Thank god for that." I commented.

".......What exactly is he presenting?" Darius finished.

"I'm sure he's doing something super cool using Mae's communication. We really got through to him. In fact, he even asked me to prep for the investor cocktail party. He said, and I quote, 'I'd rather you do it than those stupid robots'." Kenji explained.

"Wow, Kenj. Nice. How about I help?" Brooklyn suggested.

"Oh, sorry, B. Dad's gotta get to know you before he'll trust you with an important assignment like this. It has taken me a long time." Kenji sighed before he placed his hand over Brooklyn's. "But after I'm done, maybe we could hang out. Just the two of us."

"Ooh, like a date?" Darius smirked while wiggling his eyebrows at Kenji.

"Yeah. Our first real date." Kenji smiled.

"I'd love that." Brooklyn giggled.

"Perfect. I'll set everything up for my dad, and then......meet you here at sundown." Kenji said before he ran off to get to work.

"Wow, you know Kenji's really happy when he's that excited to do work." Darius said.

"I know." Brooklyn sighed. "But what if Mr. Kon gave him busy work so he could be free to do something shady?"

"Let's find out. Just the three of us. Super low-key style, for Kenji's sake." Darius said.

"Totally." Ben spoke up from where he lent against a table, eating a donut. "I just saw Mr. Kon head into the jungle. I'll grab Firecracker and low-key show you which way he went. Follow me." Ben said as he started walking away.
