69. He's dead.

Peter waited and waited. Not a word, not a single message, and Robin didn't show his face once.

Even though the kids were doing better, Felicia still asked about him every night. And despite David having less nightmares, Peter still couldn't sleep well. It wasn't just Robin's absence that was bothering him. It was having absolutely no idea how he was doing. Was he having fun with Alex? Was he getting better? Or was he still lying awake at night, like Peter? Still stuck in the past?

It had been two weeks now and Peter was growing anxious. When he tucked Felicia in, she looked at him with big eyes and a quivering lip. 'Daddy?'

'Yes, my little butterfly,' Peter said, stroking her cheek gently. 'What's wrong?'

'Is- is Robin dead? Like mommy? Is that why he can't come here anymore?'

'No!' Peter quickly said. 'No, no, absolutely not. I told you he was just a bit sick. But he will get better. He'll come back to us.'

'But if he's sick, he should just come here,' Felicia said, her voice stifled. 'You can just take care of him again. Robin wouldn't just leave us. He would miss us and come to find us, even if he's sick. He wouldn't leave us!' Tears were rolling down her face as she looked at Peter with a hurtful expression that made his heart clench.

'It's different this time, Felicia,' Peter said. 'But he's not leaving us. He will come back, I promise.'

'You're lying!' Felicia yelled. 'You're lying! He's dead and he won't ever come back! Just like mommy. He's dead. He's in a box, under the ground, just like mommy. He's dead!'

Peter pulled the uncontrollably sobbing child against his chest, holding her tense body as she gasped for air and hit his chest with her small fists. It tore him apart inside. He had never seen her like this before, not even after her mother's death. It made him realize how deeply traumatizing the whole experience must have been for her. She barely talked about it, but she was terrified to lose Robin just as much as Peter had been, or still was. Because even though he knew Felicia was just talking out of fear, he suddenly felt anxiety growing in his chest too. It was unlikely, but what if?

No, Alexander would've told him. Except, what if he didn't know?

When Felicia stopped sobbing and her body relaxed, he laid her down. Her expression scared him. She was looking into the void, with a blank expression. He could barely hear her breathing.

'Daddy will be right back,' he whispered before rushing outside and calling Robin.

He waited anxiously. After a few seconds it was picked up, but the voice he heard wasn't Robin's. 'Yeah?' said Alex.

'Alex. Is Robin with you?'

'He's in the shower right now,' Alex said. 'He left his phone outside. Do you need him?'

'Yeah,' Peter said. 'But I can wait. How is he?'

'He's getting better,' Alex said. 'He hasn't had a panic attack in three days. He still has a lot of nightmares, though.'

'I see.' Peter sighed. 'Well anyways, thank you so much for taking care of him. It puts my mind at ease knowing he's in good hands.'

'Well of course, that's what friends are for, right? Besides, it's way more fun having a roommate.'

'Yeah,' Peter said. 'Well, you know you're always welcome here too, right? When he gets better, you should eat dinner with us sometimes. Well, only if you promise not to teach my daughter how to curse in Korean.'

Alex laughed. 'You bet. Oh, he's done. Robin, take this.'

A few seconds later, Peter could not describe the relief that fell over him when he heard Robin's voice. 'Hi?'

Peter let out a breathless 'hey.'

'Oh, Peter. How- how are you?'

'I'm fine. You? I haven't heard from you in a while.'

'Yeah, sorry, it's just-' Robin sighed. 'Well, I'm taking the break you suggested, of course. It's getting better, Anita and I have doubled our sessions, but I'm just not quite there yet.'

'Yeah,' I said. 'You seem to still have a lot of unresolved issues.'

'Yeah. A lot more than I thought. Anyways, did you just call me to check on me?'

'No. I mean, also, but... I need your help. It's Felicia.'

'What's the matter?' Immediately, Robin's voice clouded with concern. 'Is she okay?'

'I- I don't know. She just had a huge emotional outburst. Apparently, she thinks you're dead, because she hasn't seen you in a while... yeah.'

'Oh my god,' Robin whispered. 'The poor thing.'

'Yeah. She seems to be in some sort of shock now. So I would really appreciate it if you could talk to her now. And maybe drop by tomorrow.'

'Sure,' Robin said. 'Sure, I can do that. Just give the phone to her, I'll handle it.'

Peter walked inside Felicia's room again. She did not respond. 'Sweety, I've got Robin on the phone,' Peter said. 'He's not dead and he wants to talk to you.'

She did not respond, so Peter just put the phone close to her ear. Her expression changed slightly upon hearing Robin's voice, but then she said. 'Daddy hired you, right? He found someone who sounds like Robin so he can pretend he's not dead.'

Peter couldn't hear Robin's reply, but after a few short sentences from Felicia, she cracked. 'It IS you,' she sobbed. 'But why did you leave us! You left us, just like mommy. Why? Do you not like us?'

It was quiet again, Felicia was listening.

'No,' she said. 'You're lying. That's bullsh*t! If you really loved us, you wouldn't leave us.'

'Felicia!' Peter said sternly, taking the phone from her. 'I'm really sorry,' he said, while signaling for Felicia to go to sleep. 'I didn't think she would be that mad at you. Don't worry, she'll get over it. She knows you're alive now. I'll take care of her, you just focus on healing.'

'No, it's okay,' Robin said. 'Felicia has a right to be mad, it's hard for her to understand. I'll drop by tomorrow.'

'Okay,' Peter whispered. 'See you then.'

Robin hung up and Peter went to Felicia, stroking her hair. 'Just go to sleep, my little butterfly. Tomorrow, Robin will come back to us.'
