The children stared at Link with wide eyes.
"Wait...it's true?"
Lily had seen the story on social media, but she imagined it was merely some attention-grabbing story fabricated by the tabloids after her mother's demise, shamefully riding the coattails of the tragedy. But here her father stood with another man. The man in the stories. She didn't know how to feel about it.
Her friends would judge her. Homophobia licked its lips at its newest victim. Because it was real. Because now discrimination had this tangible love story to tear apart. But in a strange way it was the most beautiful thing she'd seen since the ugliness of death gripped her. It was a fragile butterfly destined by twirling genes to live a depressingly short life. But it wasn't an ordinary butterfly. From its thorax sprouted the strongest pair of wings programmed to perform superhuman feats, weaving its power into a new utopian destiny. And she stared at the butterfly, preparing herself for a new life under its strange wings -
One wing was tall and blonde and the other donned glasses under a black hairline.
Yet she and her brothers felt a shared tinge of apprehension stalking the glorious reality before them. It barred its teeth and the ground shook when it let out a low growl, almost too deep to be audible. But it's destiny was set in loss. They knew it would one day hang it's scarred head in shame, forced to retire its chipped canines as it retreated into the darkness of its den. It would never win over love this strong.
Then the children, having settled their thoughts, yet again assembled into a hug, enclosing their father in it. They screeched as they wrestled each other teasingly.
"Don't worry! He's great!"
"Oh my god I'm so excited!"
"Can I be the flower boy?"
Cheeky remarks and playful tickles flew among the hustle as Rhett ran in to join the hug. He smiled like he never thought he'd smile again after yesterday's tragedy. He acknowledged his new children and it felt a little foreign at first though he knew he would adjust soon. A warmth filled him from the physical exertion. Blood coursed towards his skin, eager to rid his body of the unpleasant heat. But another warmth bloomed underneath, a feeling much more pleasant, much stronger and yet so familiar-
-love.
Finally Link called off the group hug. His new family stepped back. He lay on the floor exhausted, his hair in a mess, still smiling. His children ran off to explore the house. Rhett could soon hear them engaged in establishing who'd be hiding and who'd have to find the rest. Then they decided hide and seek would be left for another day as they broke into a playful game of chase. It was surreal. It felt like a fairytale. Link was the king and Rhett was, well-the other king - gender was a strange thing. But Rhett didn't care. As long as he was with his soulmate, nothing mattered anymore.
Rhett's lips tilted into a smirk as he dropped to his knees and leaned in, his eyes fixed on Link's.
