Narrator's pov

-

Usually we wake the next day in hopes of things being better, unfortunately for Ember this wasn't going to be that way

Life itself had a way of throwing her too many curveballs

And if she didn't catch them, life would beat her over the head with a stick

"Good morning Ms Atkins" The girl's driver greeted her, opening her side of the door for her to leave

"Doesn't seem like a good morning to me" She muttered under her breath

Ember slipped out of the car and was immediately met with the giant hospital towering over her

The building was cream on the outside, a few wooden platforms to compliment the windows. Over the door held the wooden "Atkins Hospital" logo over it. The rectangular building had a few attachments around it, some of the emergency unit while others of clinics and different outpatient wards. The shadow of the building casted over Ember's body to remind her just what she was setting herself up for

Her first day here and she was already drained of energy by taking one step in

"You better hurry, the press is already coming this way" the man said, motioning behind her

Ember glanced back to see a few vans that were parked in the parking lot, open their doors and out came the wild camera men

Not to mention the newsreporters dashing towards her with mics in there hands

"Oh for God sakes, I just got these shoes" Ember groaned, knowing her only escape was to dash into the building

With all the energy she had from the sip of water she took before leaving, she used to run towards the front door of the hospital. The few reporters were coming at her like wild cheetahs, hungry for their next meal

While the poor little prey Ember galloped towards the doors in hopes to escape the camera crew so early in the morning

"She's a runner, she's a trackstar!" A familiar voice sang

Ember furrowed her brows but didn't stop her pace, the doors were just a few steps away

"SHE GON RUN AWAY WHEN IT GETS HARD" The voice said again, only leaving Ember to roll her eyes when she saw the person standing inside the hospital

"You dumbass" she glared

"Love you too Emmstar" Fallon chuckled

The doors slammed shut and security immediately made their way towards it,  making sure the camera crew wouldn't breach through

"What are you even doing here" She asked

"You know I couldn't let you start your first day without a word of advice"

"Oh yeah? And what's that advice?" she questioned

"Don't kill your parents until you know your name is in the will" He smiled

Ember laughed at the boy as they started to make their way towards the elevator

Eyes glanced around them, familiar faces of nurses smiled while a few doctors nodded in their direction

"Seems like you're known around here" He said

"I did most of their taxes when I was ten" The girl mumbled

"Jesus. You really do have trauma" He said

"Ya think?" Ember raised a brow

Her day was just starting and misery would soon follow, but to see Fallon just might have made it better. The boy has been around for a long time and he knew exactly what goes through her mind

He was her bestfriend for a reason, seeing him here today was the highlight of her day

Her thumb then pressed against the a small pad on the elevator door, a green light then scanned her fingerprint before allowing the doors to slide open, granting them permission

"So are you staying?" She asked

"No I have classes in a few, I just wanted to make sure you don't have a pocket knife hidden in your pants to stab your mom"

"If I wanted to kill her, I'd stuff yogurt up her asshole so she'd rot faster"

"Ms gurl, what-"

"I said nothing" Ember grinned

"Bestie, are you good?" He chuckled

"I will be Falls, I will be" she said

The boy nodded slowly before biting down on his lip, he knew the girl didn't want anything to do with this job or even be here in the first place but she was trying to hold herself together

"I'll see you later" He said, leaving in closer

Ember slung her hands over the boy's shoulder while his hands rested on her waist, his hug was tight almost as if he was trying to give her some of his strength to carry through the day

"Remember, don't call the cops... Just call me" he smirked

"Yes sir" she smiled

"Bye bestieee" he grinned, stepping away from the doors

The metals doors started to slide close and Ember gave the boy a final wave before they shut

As much as Ember would joke around about the job, she truly didn't want it. Most would look at her and laugh, why would she want to give up such an opportunity that most people would die for

It's hard to want something when you've been groomed to have it in the first place

Her future was planned out for her, she's never had the chance to think for herself of be independent

Stepping back into this job simply shows that she had no progress

Her step forward was a step back, now there was nothing to do but to follow the path that was hand-built by her parents

Ember sighed as she glanced at herself from the clear, reflective walls of the elevator. Her button up shirt was neatly pressed along with her soft grey trousers. Her median brown hair flowed over her back while she stuffed her hands into her pockets

"Here goes nothing" she muttered to herself

The doors of the elevator then slid open, revealing the first floor of the hospital

Just like a firm, the top floor was opened up to ceiling to floor glass windows through the whole section, looking out onto the rest of the city

A secretary sat at her desk with a phone to her ear, her bright red lipstick matched the same colour of her nails. That explained the familiar smear stains she'd find on her father's jackets when he came home when she was younger

Ember rolled her eyes and started to stroll through the hallway, the dark grey walls complimented her pants and the white ceiling matched her shirt

The secretary's eyes widened when Ember walked past her and pushed open the door to the office

"Um excuse me?" the woman asked

Ember rolled her eyes again, she was so close to not having to interact with people she didn't like today. So close yet so far

Her grip released from the office door as she slowly closed it, turning around to face the girl

"Ms Mince" Ember forced a smile

"Is there something I could help you with!?" the woman asked

"No" Ember shrugged

"Well you can't go play in the office little girl, your father isn't in there" the woman said rudely

Ember had to hold back herself from laughing, she simply stayed calm and nodded

"I know. And he won't be coming in here again" Ember said, turning back around to the office door

The woman scoffed and stood on her feet

"And why's that!?" she hissed

"Because I'm your boss"
