let me just start off by saying that i am....disgusted.
i stumbled across one particular newt fanfic where the summary was like "newt's always been protective over you, to the point where he wouldn't even let you talk to another glader. but is pushing newt away what you really want?"

this book only has ten chapters. i haven't even finished it, but let me give you the gist:
newt is the girl's friend, but he's "overprotective" to the point where minho is having a civil conversation with her and he feels the need to intervene. she tells him to back off, but he gets angry and says she'll regret it. literally the next day, gally tries to rape her. and then it's treated as a plot in the girl and newt's romance!

first thing's first: there's a difference between being "protective" and "possessive." an example of someone being protective is when your mom won't let you go to the movies with your friends at night when you're younger. possession, i.e controlling every aspect of your life, like what newt was doing, is toxic and abusive. it's not something you should want in a relationship of any kind.
be careful how you write the relationships in your stories. don't confuse protectiveness with possession.
