Song: High Enough - K.Flay

Adelaide

---

I saw a glimpse of a red shirt before I was forced to breathe in by a punch in the stomach followed by a shout from the mystery man.

For the second time in the last few months, the world went dark.

---

This time, when I woke up, I opened my eyes.

Not because I wanted to, but because someone was shaking me, forcing me awake.

I was met with an unfortunately familiar face and I couldn't help the fury that rose up from the tips of my toes and bubbled in my chest as I stared into his eyes, only further egged on by his rising smirk.

Focus.

My eyes darted around the room and felt myself pale when I came upon Jamie wide-eyed and tied to a chair next to me.

It wasn't his presence that alerted me though, it was the knife pressed against his neck.

I sucked in a breath and turned back to the strangers glittering eyes with a look that could kill.

"What do you want?" I asked, annoyed but not surprised by the raspiness of my voice.

He backed away from me and stuck his hands in his pockets, a deliberate move to show off the gun strapped to his waist.

He stood there for a good minute, looking me up and down before glancing at the masked man holding the knife to Jamie's neck and back to me again.

He cocked his head.

"We look so different, I wonder what you see in him."

I furrowed my eyebrows, confused at his statement of their similarity.

Why would it matter?

Unlike when I was captured by Romano, I didn't have any weapons on my person, meaning I had to resort to keeping quiet until I had a plan.

The room resembled that of a panic room with no possessions inside and a deadbolt at the interior of the door.

A way out.

"What do you want?" I repeated, hoping that this time, he would realize I wasn't one to engage in frivolous conversation.

A small chuckle escaped his lips.

"It's more about what you want."

If I wasn't confused before, I certainly was now.

Why was he speaking in riddles?

"I don't want to be tied to a chair, that's for sure," I said as I shimmied my hands to draw notice to them tied behind the chair.

I looked up and met his eyes, bright with humour.

"How about a little story?"

I didn't answer, focusing instead picking at the tie with my nails.

"Let us start with Jamie, shall we?" He said, a slow grin spreading across his face as he stood up and made his way to Jamie, knife still to neck.

"Has he told you what he got up to the year he went supposedly missing?" He questioned looking back to me.

He took my silence as a no and it was true, no matter how many times I had asked him, Jamie evaded all my questions on that particular topic.

"Would it surprise you if I told you he was working for your beloved Romano?"

I only stared.

"Of course not." He continued.

He twirled so that he was directly behind Jamie, pushing his goon to the side and taking the knife in his hand and away from Jamie's neck.

I almost breathed a sigh of relief.

Almost.

"Now, would it surprise you if I told you that you weren't assigned to Mr Acerbi by accident, that your plan to kill him was doomed to fail from the beginning as a result of Jamie's incompetence?"

He pushed the tip of the knife into the side of his neck and slowly brought it down, leaving a small trail of blood behind.

A silence settled over the room, the only thing to be heard was Jamie's laboured breaths.

"That doesn't make any sense." I blurted.

His head snapped up, meeting my eyes, unwelcome mischief glinting there.

"It makes perfect sense considering how loyal Jamie used to be to MI6."

At tis point, my escape was the furthest thing from my mind, instead clouded by Jamie's motives. He let out a breathy laugh, removing the knife from his neck and turning to face me.

"Think Adelaide, why would he want to work for Romano anyways?"

I watched as he made his way over to me until he was standing directly in front of me, his scar peeking out from under his hair.

He leaned down, putting his hands on the chair next to my shoulders, leaning so close that his stubble grazed across my cheek.

"Think," his low voice whispered in my ear.

Muffled shouting filled the room as Jamie tried hard to grab my attention. My head whipped to the noise only to notice that the goon had disappeared.

How did he leave the room?

A cool finger wrapped around my chin, pulling my head back forward so that his lips were next to my ear and all my other thoughts were expelled.

"Was it a coincidence you were both 'hired' by the same man?" He prodded further.

My head spun at a million miles a minute, questions swirling like a tornado as I tried my best to have some sort of control over them.

And then it clicked, my body stilling.

No, it couldn't be.

I turned to Jamie, my eyes wide. I shook my head.

His honey eyes that had given me such love in the past now carried a look of pure desperation, as if what I would say could change everything, and it probably could.

"You're a double agent."

Jamie's face transformed as soon as the words escaped my mouth, turning into one of defeat, that was the only conformation that I needed.

"You've been working with MI6 the whole time, haven't you?" I said, my voice trembling, the previous anger bubbling up inside me again.

"Haven't you?" I screamed, my blood boiling.

"Let's see what he has to say shall we?"

My eyes didn't leave his profile even as the man roughly shoved the fabric in his mouth downwards so that it was hanging around his neck like a raggedy old necklace.

Silence, there was only silence.

"Is it true?" I asked, my voice burning with the fury of a Phoenix.

He looked back up at me, "Ads-"

"Is it true?" I shouted, cutting him off.

Silence settled for a moment too long before he finally replied.

"Yes." His breath was hardly above a whisper.

He had lied to me.

The man shoved the fabric back in his mouth, not allowing us to converse any longer. He clapped his hands and turned back to me, the glimmer in his eye returning.

If he worked for MI6 then the promise of freedom that I had been given was just an illusion, but what role did I play in his plan?

"Now on to Mr Acerbi."
