The Man At The Counter

It is absurd for me to think in the moment I saw you that I could take my order

and we could talk about the special for the night

and you would share glances with me as the cooks prepared my meal

you would come over to bring the hot plate and place it infant of me and I would ask

"Can you take a break?"

You would look over at your manager and the empty bar and well served tables then smile a half right heavy smile and reply

"Sure"

We'd talk first about how you like working here because it's a job you just started

Then about the reason you work so much in the first place

The conversation would turn to me and it would stay there long enough to make you want to stay another five minutes

You'd keep coming back after that and I'd enjoy the exchange enough to stay seated

This is an absurd thought but this is the 80s.
