Chapter Thirteen
(Continuation of Chapter 12's Flashback)

I'll Always Remember You
By Hannah Montana

And hold you in my heart forever
I'll always remember you

MATT AND I strolled down a cobblestone sidewalk filled with leaves together. I hear the sound of crackling leaves under my ankle booties. From bright yellow to apricot orange, leaves of all colors began to fall randomly from the oak trees above us. A sudden blast of crisp wind sweeps through the scenic neighborhood. Shivering a bit, I pulled my yellow short jacket closer to my body with sturdy hands. There's a certain chill in the autumn air today. And I knew what it had meant. Fall had officially arrived in North Carolina at once; it was everywhere you turned now.

The sweet, earthy scent of fall is all around and I can't help but inhale a whiff of it. It smelt like a mix of damp soil, apples, and mushrooms. I smiled happily from ear to ear.

"What part of town are you guys moving to?" I asked. Raising my thick eyebrows, I cock my head to the side with a focused gaze on Matt.

Matt replied. A sad smile was spread across his handsome face. "I think it is Mount Airy or something like that."

He stared at me with half-lidded eyes and pursed lips. Matt placed his hands into the pockets of his forest green light parka. He darts his glance to the cobbled sidewalk and kicks a small pebble with his Nike sneakers.

Mount Airy? What awaits for Matt and his family in that sleepy town?

"Mount Airy is such a small town, rookie." I grimaced. "Why Mount Airy?" My nose wrinkles in confusion as I chew on my lower lip.

Matt looked up at me and grinned proudly. "My old man just got a job opportunity in Mount Airy"

"....T-That's good!" I rejoiced. My heart danced with excitement for Mr. Wright. I flashed my best broad grin. I'm sure Matt's dad was jovial about this opportunity to work.

But, I still couldn't help but feel deeply sad right now. What about me? What about us?.... Er I mean our friendship of course.

My inner subconscious scowls at me with crinkled eyes. What the hell is wrong with you? This isn't about you. She was definitely disappointed with me and my selfishness in this moment.

We turn a small corner on a neat street and come in contact with a different part of the idyllic neighborhood. A myriad of large, beautiful suburban houses are surrounded by gardens and trees. There's curving streets, gated driveways, stone mailboxes, and manicured lawns. These houses were the epitome of the American Dream. I'd wish I had my Polaroid in my possession.

"You know what I won't forget about you, kiddo."

I warned. "Don't make false promises you can't keep." My voice was heavy and full of sorrow. There's only so much broken promises I can take, before this fragile heart of mine break.

I tear my glance away from the picturesque view in front of me. Staring down at leaf-covered ground, I close my teary eyes and sulkily sigh. Damn, these tears. I can't let him see me shed a single tear. I couldn't live with myself.

"Daniela, I will try to call you almost everyday." Matt stops in his tracks and brings my face up to his, with just his slender finger. "I will make time for you whenever I can."

I stared directly into his wide, auburn brown eyes and a sparkle flashed through a dilated pupil. Matt's long finger stroked my chin, sending an jolt of electricity down my body. I trembled uncontrollably under his blazing touch. He kept an intense gaze on me and I wanted to say something, say anything. But, my heart was planted firmly in my dry mouth. I didn't know what was going on. Realization dawned quickly on my face.

This could be it. This was it, I began to think to myself.

Matt pulled his finger away from chin, giving me sweet smile. "Your my best friend, how could I ever forget about you?"

Best friend? Is that all I am to this beautiful human standing before me.

I glance away as my muscles tensed around my mouth. Swallowing hard, I plastered a frown upon my flushed face. I must've looked like a complete idiot. Staring at his eyes and hopefully for a kiss was all for nothing. The embarrassment and shame lingered deep in my core. What was I thinking?

"Hey, do you remember when we went camping last fall break?"

I blankly stare at him. "Uh, yeah. What about it?"

"I remember we both lost our friendship necklaces during our hike." Matt claimed. He held an unfocused gaze with small smile.

Unearths waves of memories crash me. Under a blue sky with the sun hanging low, Matt and I hiked through a steep trail in the early morning. I wanted to straggle my best friend with my two small hands. Matt was a morning person; I've always been a bit of a night owl. But, I did take some great pictures of the lush earth scenery around me with my camera. Thanks to my clumsiness, I tripped over my boots and knocked both of us down a low valley. The day I lost my friendship necklace still haunts me till this day.

"Well, I bought us some new friendship necklaces." Matt's voice held so much excitement, smiling hard. He stuff his hand into the pocket of his chinos and pulled out a long, sliver crescent moon necklace. "I just knew this was meant for you."

Matt handed me the shiny piece of jewelry and place it into the palm of my hand. I stared down at it in shock with wide eyes and an open. Excitedly, I rub my finger against the diamond encrusted crescent moon. A strange sensation trickles through my body and I catch his blazing eyes staring at me.

"I want you to always have a little piece of me with you." Matt murmurs sweetly. "Forever and always."
