Currently working on three essays which will be posted on Substack (one will be posted here on Wattpad, but the other two will be exclusive to Substack). I am working on essay about Audre Lorde, an essay on (Black female) aloneness and loneliness, and an essay on perception inspired by Ama Codjoe's work and interviews.
And I'm not even doing any "real" research like a good essayist...these are just my pure thoughts and personal analyses of quotes/poems and it's STILL kicking my ass lmao
Here are some links to writing prompts I posted on my Substack Born in Babylon. The first set of prompts were inspired by bell hooks' girlhood memoir and concern memory and childhood while the second set of prompts concern identity, the self, and origins. https://open.substack.com/pub/borninbabylon/p/you-vs-memory-generative-writing?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android&r=3khsdo https://open.substack.com/pub/borninbabylon/p/on-selfhood-prompts?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android&r=3khsdo
@indieballerina I subscribed!!! I'm excited to read your posts and I'm recommending you as well!! <3
Y'all, I just had such an IMMACULATE thrifting experience. I found 2 (!!!) Lana Del Rey tote bags, sooooo many Sanrio and early 2000s/Y2K stickers, 5 Sanrio pens, a pair of handmade My Melody earrings and a handmade Cinnamoroll necklace like wtf
@UNWILTED | nahhh i went to only one since its closest, but ima probably go out and check the others stores out tho. i think i might go to a vintage market, ESPECIALLY cause you got a tori morrison book lmaoo
@kusuosupremacy Have you tried other thrift stores/vintage markets in your area? The thrift stores near me don't be hitting either most of the time but I can find a gem every now and then. I went to a vintage market this time and since it was more curated than a traditional thrift store, I was able to find more things to my liking (no clothes since I didn't want to chance anything, but good knick knacks plus a TONI MORRISON BOOK HELLO????). The thrift stores have also gotten pretty pricy nowadays tho, especially Goodwill like wtf
this theme is beautiful — i cannot take my eyes off of it <3
Heyyy can you check out my profile and read my new story? It’d be nice if you do it.
I very impulsively created a Substack to share my writing...I will be cross-posting work from my books on Wattpad as well as writing original poems/essays/fragments specifically for my blog. It is called Born in Babylon just like one of my books on here because my obsession with Lucille Clifton will never not show up in just about everything I create lol I posted a slightly edited (like one line changed slightly lol) version of my poem BORN NONWHITE AND WOMAN from MOSES TURNING AWAY FROM A BURNING BUSH. I am still working out my branding/aesthetic so everything is going to be a bit wonky until I can make it all pretty and cohesive. https://borninbabylon.substack.com/p/born-nonwhite-and-woman?utm_source=profile&utm_medium=reader2
@UNWILTED Maybe I'll have to try it out. Thank you very much for the answer, it was very helpful! It'd be interesting to see how fiction does and it's cool that everyone you've interacted with so far is pretty chill.
@Astridhe ALSO!! Growth is very slow in the beginning but I'm trying to be consistent and intentional about what I choose to share (I'm sharing some poems and essays I've posted here on Wattpad + new writing + future writing that will be exclusive to Substack). So, it's really all about authenticity, interaction, and consistency on your part. At least, so far. My Substack is more so about poetry and essays/nonfiction. Idk how well fiction is received.
@Astride I'm still figuring things out so I'm kind of stumbling along rn but your posts go out as emails to your subscribers and you can share your posts as Notes on the app as well as to other sites like Twitter, Reddit, etc. (To my knowledge that is). What I've been doing so far is 1) trying to figure out my niche (whether I want to share poems and prompts, whether I want to do that + essays, whether I want to share drafts and talk about my writing process, etc) and 2) utilizing the Notes to share my thoughts and my personality as a way to attract people to me and my writing. ALSO!!! Definitely interact with other writers Read, like, comment, and share their posts. It's not as cutthroat as I thought it would be; everyone seems pretty nice and just doing their own thing at their own pace.
Born in Babylon gave me a stomach ache
If you ever write and publish an actual book you have to tell me because i want to eat ur words and become a better more feeling more freeing woman person from them
words can not describe how obsessed I am with your account. My God is it beautiful
New section and updates in born in babylon! This section was inspired by the book "Ordinary Notes" by Christina Sharpe and features lines, excerpts, and diaristic/essayistic thoughts. I also gave the first section a name and changed the epigraph(s). The first section will be for essays while the second section is for fragments and other miscellaneous writings. https://www.wattpad.com/1448500270-born-in-babylon-ii-black-fragments
I might include a section where I include prompts or a reading list...let me know if y'all would be interested in either of these or not.
