Bubbles tickle my nose as I push to the top of the water. The waves crash; push me lower. My lungs are exploding against my ribcage, cracking the bones as they protest the lack of oxygen. My mother stands above me, her hair pushed against her face in dark tangled strands. I reach out for her. Her pale, cracked fingertips break through the dark water and reach out to me. Against my better judgment, I take her help. Grasp her hand, begging her to save my life with pleading eyes.

Relief floods my body as she begins to pull me out of the whirlpool of waves until something in her face changes. Her eyes are solid black. The worried frown turns into a giddy laugh as she digs her fingers into my neck. The songlike laugh rings in my ears.

You're my mother. Why are you doing this?

Flames rip through my throat as I scream for help. I push on her hands, but she won't let go.

The edges of my vision go black.

Until I catch a glimpse of my reflection; of my hands wrapped around Claire's neck, holding her against the floor of the creek.
