SINCE SHE WAS A LITTLE GIRL, Nancy Cochran had known love and death deeply. She accepted grief with reluctantly open arms, all the while her faith in true love and the possible prospect of romance had embraced her while she wept at the thought of what she loved slipping from her hold. It was something she felt conflicted about - her entanglement with mortality. Living in the dingy, grey crevice of Birmingham, her very own Small Heath, she felt like each day she was living six feet under. Factory smog and tyrannical English weather darkened the streets while women, children and soldiers dealt with God's tender hand leading them to a better place. At least hopefully better, most places are better than Small Heath, in Nancy's better opinion.

AS SHE GREW OLDER, death became less of something she knew and more of something she feared; a thought she was forced to lie with through the rise of the sun, moon and stars until it finally snatched the people she loved. Nonetheless, she found solace in love so much so that her fear could be simply stifled just a bit. This was something she thanked Jane Austen for, her charming men and her yearning love affairs, they made her feel like a child still after witnessing death and crooked spectacles beyond her tea-stained pages. Because that's all she was: a young girl, the lively young girl who reads Austen in her mother's sweet shop with a frankly terrible ability to run safely on her two feet - and an even worse sense of direction and hand-eye coordination.

ANOTHER THING SHE THANKED JANE AUSTEN FOR, or maybe blamed was the better word, was her foolish optimism about finding love. Living where she lived, around the men that she did, leading the life she eventually would live, she still somehow thought a happy ending was inevitable rather than uncertain and troublesome. It made her kindly, hopeful and happy, but it made her a fool. A lovesick fool that shattered her guard a tad bit each time she tripped up in the street.

NANCY MARIE COCHRAN WAS A CLUMSY, LOVESICK FOOL. And she clung tightly to her love of love and fear of death, for that was something that she was very lucky to still have in Small Heath.

ii. content disclaimers: canon-typical violence & character death, swearing, eventual pregnancy and mentions of childbirth

iii. michael and nancy's story arc mainly revolves around seasons 2-4, but i have written seasons 1,5 and 6 as kind of prologue and epilogue kind of acts? if that makes sense 🕳️🚶‍♀️

iv. i obviously don't own peaky blinders, only my girl nancy, all other rights go to the creators of the show
